The Monopole game was created in the late 1930s or the early 1940s by Charlotte Dumont from Lévis, Quebec. It is a Quebec version of the Monopoly game patented in 1935 by the American manufacturer Parker Brothers in Massachusetts.
In 1904, Elizabeth Magie patented a real estate board game called The Landlords Game and distributed it in colleges and universities. In 1924, she offered it to Parkers Brothers but it was rejected. She continued to distribute it, but under the name Monopoly.
While Elizabeth Magie was distributing Monopoly, one Charles Darrow made some minor changes to the game and offered it again to Parker Brothers, who accepted it. In 1934, the company bought Elizabeth Magie's patent and since then, millions of Monopoly games have been sold the world over.
