This toy was manufactured in West Germany and bears the mark of manufacturer Michael Musslein of Zirnorf.

Tops were invented in the earliest Antiquity. They symbolized the rotation axis of the earth. Its spinning motion also evoked balance in a changing world. In 14th-century England, each town possessed a giant top that was used only for competitions during Mardi Gras.

One of my favorite toys was a large blue top like this. Mine was metal and when you pumped it, it seemed to spin forever!
